A modular portrait is a group photograph created from individually photographed team members, allowing the group to be updated as the team changes.
In this example, Justice Connect needed up-to-date group portraits of its teams. But team structures often change, and getting everyone together at the same time isn’t always possible. The solution was to photograph each person separately, then combine the individual portraits into a cohesive group image in post-production.
I’ve refined this technique over many years. Although it would normally require extensive retouching, careful planning of the lighting, camera position and eyelines during the shoot makes the process efficient and the finished image seamless.
Because the portrait is modular, departing team members can be removed and new people added later. Photographing everyone individually also means I can give each person my full attention and select their strongest portrait for the final composition.
